General Dynamic Triviality Theorems

چکیده

We have three goals in this paper. In Sections 1–3, we generalize Lewis’s results to apply to a wide variety of other principles that have a similar flavor—principles about epistemic “might”, probability claims, and claims about comparative value, including the last two in the list above. In Sections 4–5, we show how to streamline these arguments in a more minimalistic framework, which doesn’t depend on standard conditionalization or numerical probabilities. Instead, the arguments turn on structural principles about updating with new information—namely, that updates are commutative in the sense that the order of information doesn’t matter, and idempotent in the sense that repeatedly updating on the same information is redundant.1 In Section 7, we explore the prospects for maintaining some or all of the problematic principles by giving up these structural principles about update, drawing

Non-monotonic set theory as a pragmatic foundation of mathematics∗

In this paper I propose a new approach to the foundation of mathematics: non-monotonic set theory. I present two completely different methods to develop set theories based on adaptive logics. For both theories there is a finitistic non-triviality proof and both theories contain (a subtle version of) the comprehension axiom schema. The first theory contains only a maximal selection of instances ...

In this paper we study the problem of approximation of the L-topological invariants by their finite dimensional analogues. We obtain generalizations of the theorem of Lück [L], dealing with towers of finitely sheeted normal coverings. We prove approximation theorems, establishing relations between the homological invariants, corresponding to infinite dimensional representations and sequences of...

Outer automorphism groups of some ergodic equivalence relations

Let R a be countable ergodic equivalence relation of type II1 on a standard probability space (X,μ). The group Out R of outer automorphisms of R consists of all invertible Borel measure preserving maps of the space which map R-classes to R-classes modulo those which preserve almost every R-class. We analyze the group Out R for relations R generated by actions of higher rank lattices, providing ...

The Kuhn-Tucker and Envelope Theorems

The Kuhn-Tucker and envelope theorems can be used to characterize the solution to a wide range of constrained optimization problems: static or dynamic, under perfect foresight or featuring randomness and uncertainty. In addition, these same two results provide foundations for the work on the maximum principle and dynamic programming that we will do later on. For both of these reasons, the Kuhn-...
